Battle of the Books is a district competition to encourage children to read and become familiar with excellent literature. Birdville elementary librarians develop a primary and intermediate list of books for students to read each year. Students read the books and become experts. The team practices and studies until they compete. All Grace Hardeman Elementary team members receive t-shirts, and medals.

Students who would like to try out need to read the books from the Battle of the Books list. Kindergarten through 3rd grade students read the primary books and 4th and 5th grade students read the intermediate books.

Do I have to buy the books?

No, Grace Hardeman owns all of the books for students to check out.  Books are also available on SORA (Overdrive for Elementary) on the Portal as well as your local public library.

When do I need to be finished reading all of the books?

All students will be reading during our meetings but we do ask they read at home before the test is given. The test is in early October.

How do you choose the team?

Students who score the highest on the test, are A&B scholars and have good attendance are eligible for the team.  Coaches have the final say in membership decisions.

I made the team now what?

A note will be sent home with your child stating they have made the team. You will need to sign agreeing to this and that you understand your child will need to be present for all practices. The team will then practice after school one to two days a week and as the competition gets closer, the team may need to meet more. Reading at home is just as important. Parents are also asked to sign up to provide drinks and snacks for all members of their child’s team, this will only be 6 to 7 students (not both teams) and you will only need to sign up once or twice.

    When is the competition?

In February students from each elementary campus assemble at the coliseum to compete. Parents are welcome to attend to support the team.

Where can I find the Battle of the Books list?

Mrs. Bailey has copies of the list in the library and on the website. Please be sure the student understands what the story is about and looks closely at the pictures in the book, if it contains any. The students are tested on the entire book.
